
Born
in Zelezniki, Slovenia, Janez Lotric studied with Ksenja Vidall-Zebre,
at the Ljubljana Music Academy with Otta Ondina-Klainc, and with Hilde
Zadek in Vienna. He also gained further important influence during a
"Corso di perfezionamento e interpretazione" with Mario del
Monaco.
During
his studies, in 1980, Janez Lotric made his debut as Nemorino in "L'Elisir
d'Amore" at Maribor opera house, where he became a member until
1987. He won a price in 1986 in the "Toti dal monte"
competition in Treviso as Riccardo from "Un Ballo in Maschera"
and received a scholarship.
Further
success in Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic and Slovakia, and several
German opera houses followed. Lutz Hochstraate got to know the young
tenor when he directed "Ariadne at Naxos" in Ljubljana in 1993
with Janez Lotric in the role of Bacchus. As a result of this successful
collaboration, Hochstraate engaged him as Don José in
"Carmen" in 1995, as well as for als Turiddu in "Cavalleria
Rusticana" in 1996/97 at "Landestheater Salzburg".
In
June 1996 Janez Lotric made his highly acclaimed debut at Vienna State
Opera as Canio in "I Pagliacci". During that same year he also
had huge success in the role of Turiddu in the Great Festival Hall in
Salzburg, and made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Manrico in
"Il Trovatore". Only a few days after that debut, his Calaf in
"Turandot" at Vienna State Opera was welcomed with enthusiasm.
1996
brought about yet another debut: Rodolfo in "La Bohème" in a
setting of Peter Konwitschny at Graz Opera where he returned for a
series of performances of "Cavalleria rusticana/I Pagliacci"
in 1998. In December 1996 Janez Lotric also sang the title role in
"Les Contes d'Hoffmann" at the Opéra Comique in Paris. At the
beginning of 1997, he performed Don José at Hamburg State Opea and
Calaf in Kopenhagen. In May 1997 he returned to Vienna State Opera as
Bacchus in "Ariadne auf Naxos" and Manrico in "Il
Trovatore".
Since
then, Janez Lotric has sung a wide range of roles at Vienna State Opera,
such as Bacchus/Ariadne auf Naxos, Jean de Leyde/Le Prophète,
Turiddu/Cavalleria
Rusticana, Canio/I Paggliacci, Jean/Hérodiade, Manrico/Il Trovatore,
Arrigo/I Vespri Siciliani). In summer 1999 he made his debut as
Florestan at the Open Air Opera Festival of Gars am Kamp (Austria) – a
debut which was highly acclaimed by audiences and critics.
In
March 2000, Janez Lotric has made his Paris debut as Hoffmann at
"Opera Bastille" under the baton of James Conlon (Stage
director: Robert Carsen).
In
December 2000 Janez Lotric had his successful debut at the Scala
di Milano with Manrico in "Il Trovatore".
Between
1996 and 2000 Janez Lotric had sung at Vienna State Opera in 80
performances 11 roles.
2001:
In February Janez Lotric
sang in the title role in a concert performance of "ERNANI" in Zagreb
with transmission in TV, he was Alvaro in G. Verdi's "LA FORZA
DEL DESTINO"
at the German Opera Berlin.
In May he presented Hoffmann at the Opéra Bastille in Paris and
Manrico at the Operahouse of Zurich.
In June he sang performances of "TURANDOT" at the Scala Milano.
In July Janez Lotric sang two Turridus in one evening. One in
"CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA" of Pietro Mascagni, the other in "CAVALLERIA
RUSTICANA" of Domenico Monleone!
In July and August 2001 Janez Lotric sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome
Manrico in "IL TROVATORE".
Some concerts followed in Egypt.
In Bilbao / Spain he was Arrigo in "I VESPRI SICILIANI" in
December.
2002
At the Opera of Monte
Carlo Janez Lotric sang in the role of Jacopo Foscari in "I DUE
FOSCARI" of G. Verdi (with Leo Nucci as Francesco Foscari).
At the Salzburg Festival 2002 he sang Pollux in "DIE LIEBE DER
DANAE" by Richard Strauss.
In September he sang Calaf on Cyprus.
In October followed his first Calaf at Covent Garden London.
In December he could be heared as Manrico at Teatro Massimo in
Palermo.
2003
In January he sang
Calaf in Tokyo in a guestplay of he Warsaw National Opera,
in February he was Bacchus ("ARIADNE OF NAXOS") at the Opera
House Zurich,
in March he sang at Opéra Bastille in Paris Rodolphe / Arnold
in "GUILLAUME TELL" of G. Rossini,
at the State Opera of Hamburg he was guest with Calaf.
In August there were some performances of "TURANDOT" in Santiago de
Chile,
in October followed in Athens his representation of Arrigo in "I
VESPRI SICILIANI".
In November and December he was singing Hoffmann in Tokyo.
2004
Highlights of that year
was the short term responsibility of singing the extremely difficult
title role in a concert performance of DIMITRIJ (Antonin Dvorák) at the
Vienna Concert House,
the presentations of Bacchus ("ARIADNE AUF NAXOS") at the Opéra
Bastille in Paris,
Canio / Turridu in "I PAGLIACCI" resp. "CAVALLERIA
RUSTICANA" at Aalto Theatre Essen,
Arrigo ("I VESPRI SICILIANI") at Teatro Massimo in Palermo.
2005
At the beginning of this year he sang again at the Vienna State Opera
Alf
"THE BAT" (Alfred).
After "UN BALLO IN MASCHERA" (Riccardo) in Toulon there came an artistic
high point in February.
Janez Lotric sang at the German Opera Berlin under Thielemann the
Apollo in "DAPHNE" (Richard Strauss). Here he also sang "AIDA" (Radames),
"LA FORZA DEL DESTINO" (Alvaro) und "I PAGLIACCI" (Canio).
In Slovenia he sang
„LES CONTES
D’HOFFMANN“ (Hoffmann), "IL TROVATORE" (Manrico) und
"NORMA" (Pollione).
Concerts he gave in Norway and Czech..
In October Janez Lotric sang
AIDA" (Radames)
in
Tokio.
Im December 2005 he sang for the first time at
Metropolitan Opera New York the role of Alfred in "THE BAT".
2006
In January he
had performances at the MET.
In January and FAbruary he was Duca in "RIGOLETTO" in Maribor.
In March he sang for the first time Otello ("OTELLO") at
Tokyo
Opera Nomori with very great success.
In
addition to the Italian, French and German repertoire, he also sings
rare works, such as the title role of the popular Croatian "Opera
Comique": "Ero, the picaro".
Innumberable
Radio, TV and LP-recordings have been made with Janez Lotric, as well as
two CD recordings: "Sonetni venec dr. Franceta Preserna" by
L.M. Skerjanc; and "Operatic Duets for Tenor and Bariton",
together with Igor Morozow. His most recent CD with tenor arias from
operas by Donizetti, Gounod, Glinka, Offenbach, Verdi, Mascagni,
Giordano, Leoncavallo and Puccini was released in December 1999.
In June 2003 appeared at
NAXOS a new CD ("Amore, sublime amore") with arias of operas by G.
Verdi, R. Strauss, A. Adam ...)
